Karateka go back to the basics
Frik Willemse, sensei of the local Shorinryu Butokukan dojo, said the training went exceptionally well, and karateka from as far as Pretoria and Port Elizabeth attended.
Ensuring the standard of Shorinryu Butokukan was maintained, karateka attended a two-day seminar last Friday and Saturday.
Hosted by South African Shorinryu Butokukan head, Carel van der Westhuizen, at Newcastle Senior Primary, the seminar focused on ensuring that the style of Shorinryu Butokukan was standardised and aligned to the original style from Okinawa, Japan.
Sensei Carel claimed he was impressed by the standard of karate in Newcastle.
“There was less need for explaining, but mostly because it was [due to the standard of] the senior people (black and brown belts) at the seminar. But the seminar went really well and it felt like I had been visiting family,” Sensei Carel said.
Frik Willemse, sensei of the local Shorinryu Butokukan dojo, said the training went exceptionally well, and karateka from as far as Pretoria and Port Elizabeth attended.
“I would like to thank all our students who attended, with a special thanks to our Pretoria and PE students who travelled far,” he concluded.
