Visiting golfer from Australia shows how it’s done
Playing with borrowed golf clubs, he showed that good ball strikers can generate enough spin to get the ball to stop quickly and even spin back
The entries for this Sunday’s LCC Mixed Trips bowls tournament, sponsored by Ntokozweni Developers, closed on Monday afternoon with a full entry of 14 teams having been confirmed. This is great news for our bowlers, and we all look forward to some good weather and competitive bowls on Sunday.
Wednesday afternoon’s golf competition continues to gain momentum and it is so encouraging to see the increase in the number of golfers coming out to enjoy the afternoon golf.
On Wednesday, there were enough golfers to have a Four-Ball Alliance competition for those who arrived early enough for the 12.30pm start and then an Individual Stableford competition for the later starters. The winners of the Alliance were Noel Hoffman, Shane Davies, Geoff Lee and Vincent Black with a great score of 93 points, followed by Pier Turconi, Andrea Sirchia, Bheki Mbokazi and Scott Hutchins with 88 points. Scott Hutchins, a visitor from Sydney, Australia, played with borrowed golf clubs but still showed some of us the way around our course with some great shots into the ‘new’ greens, displaying that good ball strikers can generate enough spin to get the ball to stop quickly and even spin back.
Aurette Boardman is making a habit of showing the men the way on Wednesdays and she won the Individual competition with 39 points from Andrew Bouwer, who scored 36 points.
There was no official golf competition on Saturday and the AOG Individual Stableford was won by Gerry Grobler with an excellent 41 points. The Ladysmith Country Club golfers who travelled to the South Coast for the annual Natal Golf Union Inter-Club Championships did not fare too well in the wet and windy coastal conditions.
The official ‘Opening of the Green’ bowls competition was played on Sunday morning and a good turnout of bowlers enjoyed their bowls on a green that has recovered very well after the spring treatment. Winners of the event were Craig Booth and Jane Duncan, with Peter Landsdale and Ralph Duncan in second spot, and Glynnis Turconi and Kurt Swoboda taking third place. A social braai followed the prize-giving and all enjoyed the good fellowship at the club.
It was so encouraging to see the tennis courts abuzz with young tennis players on Saturday morning, with six school tennis players taking part in a tournament. Thanks to the organisers.
The Friday evening supper ‘specials’ were well received by the members and guests, and there was a very good response to this social. This Friday, the specials are roast beef or roast pork, with roast potatoes, vegetables and a dessert. At R50 a ‘special’, this is a real value-for-money treat and the fellowship that follows is also warm.
The annual ‘Sponsors Cocktail Party’, which brings all our sponsors together to set out the calendar for the 2015 year, has been arranged for Wednesday, November 19, from 6pm.
The Golf Business League, sponsored by Ferobrake, starts on Thursday (today) at 4.30pm. This is a nine-hole team Alliance competition. Get your teams there on time for the ‘shotgun start’.
This Saturday’s golf competition is the Monthly Mug, sponsored by Ladysmith Construction, and the bowling green will be buzzing with 14 teams of trips on Sunday for the LCC Mixed Trips Tournament.
The finals of the Mortimer Toyota League will take place on Sunday, November 23. The draw for teams is on the notice board, so captains are to please make sure their teams are “ready”.
