Swimming siblings splash to victory

Recently the siblings participated in a short course gala in Vryheid and excelled to such an extent that they truly did Newcastle proud.

Swimming is more than just a sport for brothers, Sharur and Varish Ramautar. It is a way of life.

Recently the siblings participated in a short course gala in Vryheid and excelled to such an extent that they truly did Newcastle proud.

During the gala, 14-year-old Sharur won four bronze medals.

Sharur who has been swimming competitively for five years, said he was proud of his achievement. “It feels good to have won four medals, because at galas such as this, you are competing against the best swimmers in KwaZulu-Natal,” he said.

Sharur added that his medals reflected the reason he enjoyed swimming. “I enjoy swimming, because unlike other sports, when you win you know it is your own hard work that shows,” he claimed.

During the same gala, 19-year-old Varish won eight medals. “I got three gold, four silver and one bronze. This is a personal achievement for me, getting eight medals out of the nine categories that I participated in,” he said delightledly.

Varish has been involved in competitive swimming for 10 years and said he enjoyed swimming due to the way swimmers could express themselves in the water. “With swimming, it is not a sport that can be compared to other sports as it takes place in a totally different environment. With swimming, you can climb in the water and do what you do best,” he said.

With their outstanding performance at the Vryheid short gala, the brothers intend to further their swimming careers.

Sharur would like to compete internationally. “I would like to go as far as possible and reach my full potential,” he said.

Varish would also like to reach an international level. “I would be extremely happy to participate in the Olympics, but I will go as far as possible,” he concluded.
