With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, lovebirds are already planning for the special day. Cyclists, however, should not forget to bookmark February 15 as well when the annual Checkers and Waterside Cycle Challenge will take place.

Pledging support to CANSA, Newcastle Wheelers club has pledged to match all donations made by race entrants to the association.

CANSA will also be playing its part by giving a free wrap to everyone who pledges R50 or more.

Races will vary in degrees of intensity ranging from the gruelling 100km race for serious riders to the basic 20km fun road race for the beginner or social rider. An intermediate race of 60km has also been included to test the stamina of seasoned cyclists.

This year, the route has changed from the undoubtedly intense dam route to a faster speed route towards Utrecht.

The routes will begin and finish at the Waterside Engen/ Wimpy, whilst cyclists will travel on the N11 towards Utrecht, with racers turning at different points depending on their race category.

20km competitors will turn around at the Newcastle/ArcelorMittal off-ramp, will the 60 and 100km riders will continue on the N11 towards Utrecht.

The 60km riders will turn around at the Utrecht turn-off, while the 100km particpants will continue to Utrecht before making their way back once they have reached the town’s entrance.

Refreshments and water tables will be available at each turning point.

Off-road races of 17 and six km will also be held for BMX and mountain biking fans, and this race will follow the same route as last year, behind Waterside Wimpy.

Medals for all competitors who complete the race will be awarded during the event, and category winners will receive cash prizes. There will also be lucky draws.

Entry forms are available at newcastlewheelers@gmail.com / www.kzncycling.co.za / Triathlon Cycles / Notice Boards at Schools / or contact 083 3788 987.
