Vryheid Luremasters – Bigger Bass elude anglers

Anglers need not be worried, at this stage the warm weather brought fishing to a standstill but the slightly colder weather of Autumn can boost the catches soon and it can stay until May this year.

THE hot and dry summer months had a negative result for the monthly league meetings from November 2014 to February 2015.

Bigger bass have dived to the lower sanctions of rivers and dams and they have proved catching them is a hard task. November league was won with a 1.10kg bass, December with a 0.470 red breasted tilapia, January 2015 at Delport Davel a 1.69kg bass was caught and the last meeting at Bivane Dam, this trophy dam could only produce a bass of 1.80kg caught by Brent Bevon.

The fish did not come to the party due to the very hot days, receding water levels and that stagnant feel of lazy fish. Anglers need not be worried, at this stage the warm weather brought fishing to a standstill but the slightly colder weather of Autumn can boost the catches soon and it can stay until May this year.

All anglers in Vryheid have something to look for in May this year. The eleventh Bivane Challenge Competition will be held on May 23 and 24. All big bass fisherman frequent this tournament every year and this is the highlight of this club’s festivities for the year. All entries, banking details and prizes are on the website at www.bivanechallenge.co.za.

Come and join the fishing and bring your family for the two days of camping for the last time in the autumn this year. If you are a fisherman, remember that the heaviest bass carries a prize of R20000-00 unlimited due to size or weight. We will see you there!

A small hint is that due to the very hot conditions the best time is very early in the morning or very late in the afternoon before dusk.

“My favourite lure is a top water Rapala minnow or a Heddon chukka that is erratically slowly drawn by weed beds.” says Allan Muller, Media Officer for Vryheid Luremasters, “It is not a sure thing but it has given me a lot of fun lately.”

Tight lines.
