The Newcastle Oval Track was alive with the sound of roaring fuel-guzzling engines last weekend.
The Newcastle Oval Track was alive with the sound of roaring fuel-guzzling engines last weekend.
It was a milestone day for the track as it hosted its first ever women’s race.
Coupled with this leap forward, the event was also hosted in memory of Antonie van den Bergh, a local racing legend.
While the women performed exceptionally well for their first race on the Newcastle circuit, many eyes were drawn to the stellar performance of 11-year-old Tiaan Buys.
The Rookie driver has been creating waves ever since he began racing a few years ago.
He topped his division ahead of nine-year-old Stephan van der Merwe and Nathan Anderson. Tiaan gained further acclaim when he finished third in the Tin Top division just two places behind his father, Boet Buys. The young lad is looking deadlier at every race. Who knows, soon enough he could be watching his father disappear in his rear view mirror.
Koos (Hendrik) van der Merwe was also on top form as he topped both the Two-litre and Hot Rod classes. Antonie van der Merwe, showed a slight lapse in his recent form, after he dropped to a second place finish behind JP Bruin, and just ahead of Shaukat Khan.
In the first ever women’s event, Zaakirah Khan managed a convincing victory, showing she shared her husband’s passion for racing. Raeesa Jamalodeen and Nadia van der Merwe also proved to be quite skilled behind the wheel, taking second and third places respectively.
Roux van der Colf dedicated his victory in the 1660-category to the late Antonie van den Bergh.
