Burnt End

The ever-popular Fedauto Summer Business league came to an end last Thursday evening with the final round being played between the two sections.

Not even a rain delay could dampen the spirit of the players and at the completion of the games the prizes were awarded to the top five teams – First, Putt Putts; second, Pensioners; third, Beach Bums; fourth, Melo’s; fifth, Toppies and Laaities.

Teams Psycho and Rod Mills were also awarded prizes for propping up the logs and Vicky’s Vixens were awarded a prize for the most spirited team.

The club thanked sponsors Fedauto and to all the participating teams for their invaluable support.

The Northern’s zone senior fours competition was completed in Volksrust recently.

Newcastle’s Dorothy Crosbie, Phyllis Reis, Marie Botha and Edith Pretorius won the event while Lorrainne Vincent’s team from Vryheid finishing second.

A pleasing entry of six senior men’s teams battled it out over five rounds with the outcome decided on the last end.

Eventual winners after having only lost one game was Hogart Gever’s team from Vryheid, closely followed by Newcastle’s evergreen Ernie Phillps, Mike Martens, Piet Reyneke and Colin Broderick.

The monthly Fedauto meat competition attracted a field of 32 players with the main meat prizes being won by Trevor Douthwaite, Glenn Moore, Graeme Massey and Bert Rodgers.

The club mixed pairs competition started last weekend and after four of the five rounds the top two teams in each section are: Section A: Ron & Alice Howe (seven + 48), John Douthwaite & Sue Hutchinson (five + 23). Section B: Andy & Dorothy Crosbie (six + 18), Lou & Eleen Roux (six + 17).

The KZNCB pro 10 playoffs are to be held at Klipbank Bowling Club in Ladysmith this weekend (April 18 and 19) and we wish Newcastle Bowling Club’s representatives Andy Crosbie and Bert Rodgers, and Mike Martens and Colin Broderick good bowling.

Newcastle Bowling Club members were saddened to hear the news of the sudden death of one of their long-standing members, Dave Forbes.

Dave was one of the few bowlers who could be regarded as a natural. Having been born into a bowling family, Dave started bowling at a young age in Ladysmith and it was not long before his talent was recognised and he was selected to represent Natal.

He won numerous All Natal titles and even after a long lay-off from the game, he would return and would immediately find his form with his rapid bowling action. He unfortunately gave up the game a while ago and his presence on the greens was sorely missed. Sincere sympathies are expressed to his wife Deidre and children and grandchildren.
