Burnt End

Newcastle bowlers have been busy during the last few weeks, playing at venues throughout the province.

In the KZNCB Mixed Pairs play-offs in Richards Bay, Ron and Alice Howe narrowly missed out on winning their third mixed pairs title when they were pipped on shots by eventual winners, Barry Mutlow and Ronel Greef of Richards Bay.

Going into the last game, these two pairs were the only couples in contention for the title and they had to play each other to decide the winner.

As Ron and Alice were two points behind, they not only had to win the game, but had to do so convincingly as they were behind on shots.

With three heads to go, they were 18 – five up, but then Barry and Ronel scored on the final three ends. Although Barry and Ronel lost the game, they won the tournament narrowly on shot difference.

Barry and Rone lwill now travel to Hermanus to participate in the South African mixed pairs competition.

In tabs club meat competitions played on the recent public holidays, prizes were won by Sid Price, Roger Jackets and Jean Ball on 27 April, and on 1 May by Ernie Phillips, Trevor Moore and Vicky van der Merwe.

Dundee Bowling Club hosted the annual Theo Gehren Mixed fours competition with a pleasing entry from most clubs in the zone.

Newcastle’s Sid Price, Anil Durgadin, Fritz and Marie Botha were the eventual winners, followed by two Dundee teams skipped by Carel Arndt and Greg Connely.

To prove that bowls is no longer an ‘old man’s game’ also participating in the tournament was the Shaw family from Newcastle, Stephen and Samantha with their sons, aged 10 and six respectively, who gave a good account of themselves, narrowly missing out on a podium finish.
