Murray cards a “cracker” of a round
A small field of golfers, with a number of out-of-town visitors, played in this Four-Ball Better-Ball Stableford event and the scores were scintillating to say the least

Yet another long weekend with superb weather, along with good golfing activities at the club. There was no official golf competition on Friday, but there were many golfers who enjoyed the course, the facilities and the social atmosphere heading into the weekend.
Saturday’s golf competition was sponsored by Hoffman House B&B and this was combined with a fund-raiser to assist Chris Botha. A small field of golfers, with a number of out-of-town visitors, played in this Four-Ball Better-Ball Stableford event and the scores were scintillating to say the least.
Murray Hume has been complaining for some time now that the handicap system has the better of him, as he is being “chopped” on a regular basis, but with his golf really coming back to form, he has been carding some great rounds and Saturday’s round of 70 (one under par) was possibly his best round ever. No wonder the handicap system took care of this and “chopped” yet another shot off.
Winners of the competition with a score of 51 points, incredibly on a count-out, were Murray Hume and Andrea Sirchia, beating Vernon Naidoo and Neal Singh by the count-out method only. Third place on 45 points, also on a count-out, went to Craig and Carl Zietsman, with Tommy Larkan and Vincent Black taking fourth spot. ‘Nearest the Pin’ winners were Murray Hume, Vernon Naidoo, Craig Zietsman and Carl Zietsman. Murray, Craig and Carl converted their nearest-the-pin efforts into birdie twos.
Thanks to Noel and Gill Hoffman for the sponsorship of this competition, and especially to Gill for the delicious halfway house snacks.
One round of the men’s singles bowls championships was played on Sunday afternoon between Kurt Swoboda and Pier Turconi. It was a tough match with some really close-drawing shots by both bowlers and in the end, it was Pier who managed a close 21-17 win.
Three LCC bowling ladies were invited to attend the Midlands Bowls Trials on Sunday at Bergville Bowling Club. Congratulations to Ann Cerrai and Jane Duncan on their selection to the Midlands team, and to Glynnis Turconi who is a reserve.
This Saturday is the Ladysmith Construction Monthly Mug, which includes the May round of the Medal Eclectic competition. At this point, the Eclectic leaders are Leon Petersen in the ‘A’ Division with 65 gross / 57 net, followed closely by Wayne Bentley. The ‘B’ Division lead is shared by three golfers with 56 net. Vernon Sanders, Trevor Jacobs and Heinz Habermann will be trying to improve their scores on Saturday.
Next Saturday’s competition is the Hamilton Preparatory School Golf Day. The weather in May, June and July is ideal for outdoor sports like golf, bowls and tennis, so make the best of the good weather and the sports facilities available at your club.
Dr Mags Magan has flown to Katmandu to assist the Gift of the Givers Foundation with medical support in the relief effort after the devastating earthquake in Nepal. We are very proud of his personal sacrifice and assistance in the humanitarian crisis, and we wish him a safe return to enjoy his golf and bowls at Ladysmith Country Club.
