Breeding the future of golf

Have you ever wondered what the future of local golf is?

Take a drive to Newcastle Golf Club and there you might find the answer, nestled in the hearts and minds of a group of development players putting, teeing and chipping their way to success.

Observe them, and realise the next Masters golfer might be in your midst.

On Fridays weekly, the development group sets off under the supervision of KwaZulu-Natal Golf Union representative, Walter Malevu, and teachers, Sias Weyers, Brian Mweli and Chantel Rice.

These boffins understand children are the foundation of the future Newcastle Golf Club.

Grooming the children to excel at golf, Mr Malevu said the intention was to create involvement and take children away from the streets and vices such as drugs and alcohol.

“We are very appreciative to the club members, especially club captain, Dries Els and club manager, Elred Darvall. The results of their support are still to come.”

Among the brightest stars of the development circuit is Lindo Mncwango, joining the team with no experience, yet already reaping the rewards of diligence, patience and focus.

His success is so far capped by representing NKZN recently.

“I am confident he will represent the province later this year,” Mr Malevu added, who himself was a development player a few years ago.

Mr Malevu thanked the club for showing interest and support, while Mr Els and Mr Darvall said it was important to promote the continuing development of the sport.

Even those who knew little about golf were welcome to learn. “We give assistance as a club and made the course available for free for development players on Fridays.”
