Boschpick Newcastle Highlanders remain undefeated in the league after they thwarted Piet Retief 69- seven at Arbor park on Saturday.

Running in 11 tries to Piet Retief’s one, and bulldozing its way to victory in the scrums, Highlanders were utterly dominant. Highlanders this season adopted an open running approach, have scored 62 tries in six matches, and have amassed an astonishing 412 points in these games.

This approach was again vital in scoring three tries within the first few minutes on Saturday.

Leading 33-seven at the break and having already secured the bonus point, with five tries on the scoreboard, Highlanders had Piet Retief with its back against the wall. After the break, another six tries were scored.

“We as a team are very happy with the way things are going, I must give the players credit. They are working very hard at Tuesday night’s practices on their fitness and strength, and it shows on the field with the brand of rugby they are playing,” said Coach Andre Swanepoel.

The key to the Highlanders victory was in its quick and skilled backline, coupled with the forwards doing an excellent job providing good clean passes for the backs.

“As a team, we also decided that it doesn’t matter who scores the try, as long as the team win.”

Highlanders scored many long distance tries, with Fullback Wandile Nkosi bagging three tries, and match captain, Robert Everson grabbed himself two tries, while Johan Esterhuizen scored 19 points and one try, pushing his tally in six games to 117 points.
