Racing to victory
Screeching tyres, roaring engines and a rush of adrenaline are the fast world of Faizel and Razia Cassim.
Screeching tyres, roaring engines and a rush of adrenaline are the fast world of Faizel and Razia Cassim.
The racing couple recently participated in a drag racing event held in Mtubatuba and literally left their opponents in their tyre tracks.
In the four wheel drive (4WD) division, Faizel raced to victory in his Golf R with a time of 11.7 seconds.
In the FT division, Faizel took the win with his Scirocco in a flying time of 12.1 seconds.
Razia was deemed as the fast female of the day, taking her Golf R to a speed of 188 km and finishing her 4WD race in a time of 11.7 seconds. “I was not really happy with my time, as I had hoped to break my previous record.”
Razia’s previous record was speeding down the runway in 11.6 seconds.
“If I had taken 00.1 second off my previous time, I would have been happy.”
Looking back at the race, Razia said that she and Faizel were grateful for all the fellow racers and spectators for making the event possible.
“We would also like to thank our children, as well as Bongane Mdlalose and Neels Koen for the preparation of our cars. We would also like to thank our tuners for their dedication and the long hours that they spent on our vehicles.”
While Razia and Faizel did extremely well in the Mtubatuba Race, they now prepare for their next challenge, the Daisy Raceway in Port Shepstone on June 27.
“It is by invite only and we will be representing Newcastle as Northern Natal Motorsport,” Razia said proudly.
While Faizel and Razia thoroughly enjoy their time racing across the country at various events, they hope that a race track will be erected in Newcastle.
“People are interested in racing and we would like to share our love and hobby,” Razia wished.
