Speedsters heat up the Oval Track

As the dust cleared and the chequered flag soared through the night air, the following racers proved their mettle behind the wheel:

The Oval was alive with the sound of racing.

After an action-packed meet on June 20, the proverbial music from the stands was the clamouring of supporters, baying for more.

The continued backing of fans inspired racers to push the limit.

As the dust cleared and the chequered flag soared through the night air, the following racers proved their mettle behind the wheel:

JP de Bruin was the overall leader of the 1600s division, ahead of Johann de Jager and Anthony van der Merwe.

The Rookies division was another chance for Tiaan Buys to shine.

Proving a racing talent far beyond his years, the youngster crossed the line in pole position ahead of Ruan Beetge and Stephan van der Merwe.

The Go Carts division was hugely popular with fans.

Making up the top three were Hugh Pretorius in first, Kayla Pretorius second and Ruaan Labuschagne the bronze finisher.

Imraan Ameer was the best racer of the 1660s contenders.

In second and third respectively in the same division were Francois Greyvenstein and Shaukat Khan.

Cathleen de Jager again proved women know their way around a car.

She dominated the female racing division, with Zaakira Khan and Nadia van der Merwe chasing her tail lights.

Like father like son for the Buys family…

Showing where young Tiaan gets his skill from, Boet Buys headed the Tin Tops, with Stoffel van Rooyen and Flip Gericke close behind.

However, the day’s best results went to Hendrik van der Merwe.

He took the chequered flag in both the 2 Litres and Hot Rods division, ahead of Gideon Hand and Pieter Bester, and Craig Lindeque and Fred van Dyk respectively.

Defending this performance all comes down to the next race on July 25.

Speaking on behalf of Newcastle Oval Raceway, Annie van den Bergh offered thanks to those braving cold nights to show their enthusiasm.

“Until our next meeting, God bless!”
