Wrestlers show no mercy

Wrestlers from Newcastle's Wrestling Club have proved to be a force to be reckoned with.

Wrestlers from Newcastle’s Wrestling Club have proved to be a force to be reckoned with.

Last Saturday, 17 wrestlers participated in a No Mercy Tournament held in Glencoe.

A No Mercy Tournament requires wrestlers to compete in four matches. The four matches are divided into two rounds each, with a time limit of two and a half minutes.

“The competition tests the wrestler’s stamina and endurance,” Lizzy de Wet from the club explained.

With wrestlers from as young as six, right up until 16 years of age, the Newcastle wrestlers fared well on the mat.

With the No Mercy Tournament now under their belt, local wrestlers are now preparing for the KwaZulu-Natal Championships.

The KZN Championships are set to take place at the Arbor Park Sports Centre on August 29, where wrestlers will compete against the best of the best across the province.

After the daunting experience of tackling the KZN Championships, the club will then be participating in the South African Championships to be held in Cape Town in October.

“It is the biggest event on the wrestling calendar and ends off the year,” Mrs de Wet said.
