Karate Day on October 23, is one of the most unrecognised days on the sporting calender, but there was a handful of Newcastillians who recognised the day.

In honour of the day, Shoryin Ryu Butokukan Newcastle, participated in the annual 100 Kata Challenge on Saturday.

The challenge initially began as a global initiative to pay homage to Okinawan karate and its role in martial arts as we know it today.

The 100 Kata Challenge saw karateka do 100 repetitions of a chosen kata.

The purpose of this was to display physical stamina to perform a specific kata, but also mental stamina to stay focused in order to perfect required moves.
