A new hope for cricket enthusiasts

Is there a glimmer of hope for cricket in Newcastle?

Vish Govender, Director for Parks, Recreation and Cemeteries, said the municipality top-dressed the entire Paradise B Sports Grounds, painted both cricket screens and replaced the sheets damaged by strong gusts of wind.

“We have also repaired and painted both cricket screens at Arbor Park Sports Grounds. The practice nets at Paradise B grounds have received new mats and fencing. Currently, we are busy with new conveyor belts for the nets,” he said.

Assuring the community the municipality was addressing the condition of the cricket grounds, Mr Govender said the municipality had allocated a budget of R500 000 for the club house at the Paradise Sports Grounds.

“Despite having competing priorities such as water and housing, we will continue to set aside monies for sport. We have R1,5-million set aside for an indoor cricket pitch at Fernwood,

R1,5-million for a new netball court in oSizweni and R1-million for a new combo court in Ingagane.”

An urgent task team was formed to meet the president of the Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal Cricket Union, to address the requirements of the cricket federation, Mr Govender concluded.
