For those who think bowls is an elderly person’s sport, think again.
Already featuring some budding talent, the Century Place Club’s bowling fraternity is a mix of experience and youth, a fact Trevor hopes to capitalise on.
“We are planning a 2016 league for short mat bowls. We are sponsoring this event to the tune of R10 000.”
Trevor’s ultimate goal is to determine the top 16 local players.
“We want to make it exciting for players, family and supporters. We’re looking at a similar feel to a business league.”
Demonstrating the short mat game, Trevor explained the basic concept of bowling was the same, albeit on a smaller scale.
The bowling mat changes the pace, however.
“It is quick to learn and people can see there is no need for experience.”
Presently, Newcastle is one of only a handful to boast short mat bowling facilities, mostly due to the presumed novelty of the sport.
However, short mat bowls was actually developed in the mid 80s.
Promoting the sport as one bearing few costs or inconveniences, Trevor believes short mat bowling has the potential to grow exponentially.
To him, it’s nothing more than sharing a love with those around him.
