More than 150 swimmers arrived at Newcastle Swimming Pool, to compete at the Amajuba District Long Course Championships on Saturday and Sunday.

After a year of training, swimmers were out to prove themselves on the weekend.

More than 150 swimmers arrived at Newcastle Swimming Pool, to compete at the Amajuba District Long Course Championships on Saturday and Sunday.

Mostly, swimmers competed for trophies and records.

“The swimmers are also trying to qualify for Levels 1 to 3 in March,” explained Amy Fraser, spokeswoman for Newcastle Swimming Club.

With nine clubs represented in total, coach, Tharina Peters added the event was a success, featuring a good atmosphere and favourable weather for swimming.

Ms Fraser concluded with a thank-you to swimmers and clubs that participated.

“Without your support, there would be no gala. Also, a big thank you to the Newcastle club committee and parents for their hard work and effort over the weekend.”

Newcastle Swimming Club results are as follows:

Abigail Peters was among the pick of the locals, earning herself eight gold medals and four silvers over the two-day event.

Kayla Pretorius ended with five gold and two silvers.

Other top contenders were Varish Ramautar, with three gold, one silver and two bronze, and Gustav Boshoff, finishing with two gold, three silver and two bronzes.

Amy Fraser earned one gold and four bronze medals.

Sharur Ramautar attained one gold and two bronzes, while Francois Weyers went home with two silver and one bronze medal.

James Schnetler wrested two silvers from the championships.

Others making the list were Arno van Zyl (one silver), Jany Schnetler (one silver, four bronze), Kelsey Kemp (one silver, two bronze) and Cameron Fraser (one bronze).

Congratulations also to the following club members who took part, namely Nerissa Fourie, Erich van Zyl, Paula van Zyl, Dewald van Zyl and Christiaan Visagie.
