Aimee recounts Samoa memories

Bowling prodigy, Aimee Schnetler remains a focused competitor on the green.

Despite an unfortunate end to her Youth Commonwealth Games efforts, the teen is intent on success next month.

In February, Aimee will compete at the Nationals in Johannesburg.

Asked how she was preparing for this competition, Aimee said she was “just practising, because the tournament is not too intense.”

Aimee fondly recalled the 2015 Youth Commonwealth Games, which took place in Samoa, a sovereign Polynesian state in the Pacific Ocean.

Unfortunately, dehydration put an end to a gold medal finish in the pairs competition.

“It was extremely hot there, and it factored into the dehydration. There was not a single cool day while we were there.”

Prior to bowing out of the Games, Aimee was the picture of focus, bearing in mind the concentration required for bowls, and the honour which rested upon her shoulders.

This attitude should carry her forward into February’s competition.

“If I make the Nationals as a winner or runner-up, I’ll go to New Zealand for the world competition. I’m looking forward to that opportunity.”

Concluding, Aimee said that South Africa had only earned about 30 medals during the Youth Commonwealth Games, but the experience was one which resonated within her.

“Samoa is a beautiful country and I would recommend everyone visits there. The best part was meeting representatives of various countries and getting to know the Samoan people.”
