Cyclists – do you have what it takes to compete with the best?

January 31 brings with it the annual Checkers and The Pines Cycle Challenge, and the Newcastle Wheelers is challenging enthusiasts to enter.

The challenge boasts a new venue and route this year.

Beginning and ending at The Pines, the challenge is out-and-back route towards the N11 Bypass, and onto the R34 Utrecht Road, until the turn-around point is reached.

Cyclists then use the same route back to the finish.

Six categories are open for entry, namely: the 20 kilometre fun ride; the 60km race open category, also set for under-14 boys and u-16 girls; the 100km race for veterans and u-16 boys; and 100km for men not included in the aforementioned classes.

Two off-road divisions have also been scheduled.

The first is a 6km off-road ride into the veld off HJ van Eck Road, while the second is a 17km trek from the venue through farms in the area.

“We urge all cyclists to keep their plastic water sachets with them, and to not litter and thus endanger animals,” urged club chairperson, Michelle Swanepoel.

Entry forms for all six categories can be requested from newcastlewheelers@gmail.com, the club chairperson on 083 378 8987 or the secretary (Chantell) on 084 422 0002.

Pre-entry registrations close on January 28.

The formal registration and number collection takes place between 3pm and 5pm on January 30, and between 5am and 6am on race day.

“Please come and support us!” Mrs Swanepoel invited.
