Cricket action on the cards for Dannhauser

Dannhauser is bracing itself for more wicket cricket action.

Once a thriving sport in Dannhauser, which brought the community together, cricketing action has been on a hiatus.

It’s been over six years since wickets tumbled and sixes flew at South Park Grounds, but the Dannhauser Cricket Association is planning on changing that. Together with the support of the local municipality, plans are underway to get the ball rolling again in the town.

Over six years ago, the sport was at its peak in the town. Competition was fierce but fair and residents gathered every weekend to watch the action unfold.
Amajuba District then invested just over a R1 million rand to have the grounds upgraded, but instead left it worse than before.

The work that was done was soon vandalised and the ground became a shortcut for people going to town. The grounds are now locked and security is on hand to stop the vandalism. Plans are underway to have the grass cut, new globes fitted and to have the pitch done.

“There are a lot of local players who play out of town in other leagues and are doing well. We have the grounds here for them so why not make use of it,” said Cricket Association Chairperson, KG Nair.

Mr Nair added that he hoped Amajuba District would still have a part to play and help finish the job. Once the grounds have been restored to some of its former glory, the association plans to host a friendly fixture at South Park to mark a new chapter in the town’s cricketing story.

With the support of the municipality, avid cricketers and the community at large, Dannhauser is bracing itself for more wicket cricket action.
