‘King of Spin’ announced in Dundee

Local team Yizo Yizo was among over 50 BMWs that competed for the title

Fans aplenty turned up to watch ‘drifting’ and ‘spinning’ at its best, carried out by local and out-of-town stars over the weekend.

Spinning and drifting team ‘360 Boyz’ was awarded the bid to host a championship event on Sunday, March 27, at the Dundee July Grounds (opposite Orange Grove Dairy). Tyres screeched and rubber burned as the drivers “opened the throttle” and pulled out all the stops with adrenaline-pumping stunts.

Reese Williamson from Durban was crowned ‘King Of Spin’ of KwaZulu-Natal. Llewellyn Lambert from Estcourt claimed second place and Dion Parag from Dundee third, all for in-car spinning. For spinning, first place went to Evershin Pillay from Pietermaritzburg and second to Chris Enicker from Durban.

Professional spinners showcased their skills, impressing the judges with their antics behind the wheel.

Local team Yizo Yizo was among over 50 BMWs that competed for the title. Sadly, however, Yizo Yizo got knocked out in the first round. Screams of delight could be heard throughout the competition as the spectators cheered wildly for the motoring action unfolding in front of them. The fans just couldn’t get enough of what they were seeing!

Spinning and drifting is not for the faint of heart. It is a well-known “sport”, although most would not see it as a sport due to it being in a car. It takes a lot of practice and dedication. The riders put their lives in danger when taking a liking to this sport, and have to be incredibly committed. In various townships, it is considered a sport to be able to spin your car in a circle.

Event organiser Preshu Singh would like to thank all the sponsors for making the competition possible and a huge success.

Drifting is a driving technique where the driver intentionally over-steers, causing loss of traction in the rear wheels or all the tyres, while maintaining control for the entirety of a corner. A car is drifting when the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle, to such an extent that often the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn (eg the car is turning left, wheels are pointed right or vice versa, also known as opposite lock or counter-steering).

It was a day of fun for the whole family!
