Single-handed victory for Raphael Mvelase

The club was abuzz with the news of Raphael’s victory and he received a huge ovation upon receiving his trophy

This year’s Club Championship at Ladysmith Country Club proved to be something special, with an incredible performance from Raphael Mvelase.

Raphael was a regular club golfer in the 90s and was seen on the golf course on a regular basis.

He was in his 30s and was an above-average golfer playing off a 9 or 10 handicap.

In 1995, Raphael had an unfortunate and serious accident which resulted in his right arm having to be amputated.

He struggled to come to terms with the fact that he would not be able to play golf again… Then, last year, he saw a player with a similar disability playing on television.

He decided to give the great game another chance and was seen practicing around the course.

In 2015, he started playing on Mondays with the caddies.

In January this year, Raphael started playing in club competitions and four months later, he felt his game was good enough to be able to compete in the C Division.

Raphael played superbly over the two days and with a very good score of 41 points on Saturday, he was in the running just one shot behind the leaders.

The leading three-ball set off early in the morning on Sunday and after 17 holes, the title was there for either one of them to win, but it was Raphael (keeping his cool and a level head) who emerged victorious after the 18th hole had been completed.

The club was abuzz with the news of Raphael’s victory and he received a huge ovation upon receiving his trophy on becoming the club’s 2016 C Division champion.

Well done, Raphael, on your great victory and we hope you continue to play well into the future and that this victory inspires many more generations to become champions as you did, even with a disability.
