AC assaults the peaks of cycling

The tough cycle began at Kleinplaas Resort in Oudtshoorn.

Newcastle is blessed with cycling talent.

One of the frequent performers is certainly AC Swanepoel, a top contender in gruelling cycling events like the Trans Drak, Homeward Bound Challenge and the Checkers and Pine Cycle Challenge.

Last week, it was the 36One MTB Challenge he tackled, from Thursday to Saturday.

AC began his solo attempt at the 361 kilometre race, in which cyclists were given 36 hours to finish.

This tough cycle began at Kleinplaas Resort in Oudtshoorn.

“The race has water tables along the route, and you must check in at three points. You aren’t allowed any support at these points,” explained fellow finisher, Heather Watson.

Out of the numerous entrants, only 286 solo cyclists crossed the finish line, many ending up disqualified or simply dropping out.

This is likely due to the total course elevation of 5259 metres.

Despite challenging dirt roads and frequent hills, including a 12km climb at Rooiberg, AC managed an average speed of 19,72km/h.

He crossed the finish line in 18 hours, 18 minutes and 33 seconds.

“The winner in AC’s category, Tom Wetton finished in 15 hours and 11 minutes,” added Heather, providing insight to the level of competition 36One boasts.

For his efforts, AC ended fourth in his age group, and proudly mustered a 34th place overall of the solo cyclists.

Congratulations, AC, and keep on stepping it up!
