A closer look at how Dundee’s Louis gave KZN golf victory

The Dundee lad has already been given a nickname by his team-mates: Beef which makes sense considering this area is the centre of the beef cattle industry in the province.

Dundee’s Louis ‘Beef’ Albertse was an integral part of the KwaZulu-Natal golf team, that won last week’s B division of the SA Inter-provincial golf tournament at the Fish River Sun.
KZN’s victory has once again promoted the team back to the division. Led by evergreen captain Gavin Sole (46) and managed by the imperturbable Ivan Curlewis, KZN put together a dominant performance that saw the team win five out of five and clinch the trophy.
“The team has been fantastic, great bunch of guys,” said Gavin whom Louis partnered in the foursomes. Louis and Gavin won all six of their foursomes games and Louis was in fantastic form to win five of the six singles he played during the IPT. Louis was judged most valuable player of the tournament.
“I’m just glad I got to be there and I thought the chemistry within the side was the highlight of my week. Everything we did was as a team.
“On the golfing side, I got a lot of backing from the team and the manager so I felt good every time I teed off and I felt I played really well throughout the week and I’m really glad I could contribute to the trophy,” said Louis.
“But the best thing in my game during the week was my putter.
“I had the ball rolling good and my partner, Gavin and I, were reading them good as well, which obviously helped. It was a good week.”

Louis is going to carry on playing the big amateur events and the odd IGT event here and there before having a crack at Q School in March next year
David Rush of the Courier’s sister paper, the South Coast Herald and who writes a golfing column for The Mercy, commented that ‘it is a pity KZN was not in the A division this year, as it’s not a stretch to suggest an overall win could have been possible.’
“Perhaps next year. Provided of course the bulk of the team remains as amateurs.”
KZN golf seems to go in cycles and so unfortunately B division hard yards seem to be bogey for the course. For a year at the very least, those ghosts have been banished, and it’s time to look forward.
So who is doing what between now and the next Interprov?
“It’s in Johannesburg next year,” said Gavin. “Let’s hope we don’t lose too many players.”
