Tyres hope to squash Rough Riders in the finals

The finals take place on November 6 between front-runners all year long Rough Riders and Neal’s Tyres, while the rest of the teams will battle it out for the Great Dane Trophy

The final round of the Mortimer League was played on Sunday and all went according plan, with no team really dominating play.

This left Rough Riders on top of the table with 49 points, followed by Neal’s Tyres on 44 points in second place.

The next five places were separated by just five points, with Scorpions finishing third and leaving the other teams wondering about what could have been or might have happened during the year.

The finals take place on November 6 between front-runners all year long Rough Riders (ridden hard all year by their captain Wayne Bentley) and Neal’s Tyres (whose captain, Neal Singh, has wheel-spun, retreaded and balanced his team to perfection), while the rest of the teams will battle it out for the Great Dane Trophy.

This month’s team profile: The Scorpions

The Scorpions have been part of the league since the early days and were started by some of the Ladysmith Wanderers cricket team. Some of the more famous or infamous names associated with the team are Bobby Orr, Gav Richmond, Jack van der Merwe and Pier Turconi, who were later followed by the likes of Stuart Hanlon and Roy Gibbons.

They have won the trophy on three occasions, with the first being 1991, again in 1994 and finally in 1998. Since their last victory, they have often challenged but never quite achieved the brilliance of the team of the 90s.

The current team, as profiled below, is not to be taken lightly and still possesses that deadly sting in the tail.

Dries Slabbert – is a player who, given the right vehicle, can change gear and a game in the blink of an indicator with some of the most AUDIacious shots one is ever likely to see.

Gerry Grobler – is always game for a challenge and although he can be a bit wild and go farming on occasions, he recovers quickly by panelling the dings and dents out his of game, which makes him hard to beat.

Brian Cuninghame – studies the game plan for the team and will then lay down the foundation for them to build upon, while erecting the structures that are needed to keep the team from tippling over.

Gerhard van der Westhuisen – is the hyper coach of the team and is the whole package, with his immense knowledge of the full range of products that one needs to have a solid game.

Corné Stevens – is the kind of player who never gets tired out, or has blowouts, remains cool even when hard pressed and is there to ensure the wheels don’t come off and they keep a grip in maintaining the high performance required to stay on the right track.
