Bulldogs maul their opponents

The back line, under new vice-captain Duran Law, were full of energy and running

On Saturday, the Clover Leaf sponsored Bulldogs played a friendly against Sentraal rugby club from Dundee. It was clear from the start that Sentraal’s intentions were to play a very physical game, using their giant forwards to bully us into submission.

This, however, did not work at all.

The Bulldogs got a scrum feed in the middle of the field after a botched kick-off attempt from Sentraal. Captain Izak called for a scrum and a well-rehearsed back row move we have used many times.

He picked up at the base, ran wide and off-loaded to Paul Barnard, who scored under the sticks. What a start to the game and the season!

For the first 25 minutes, the Clover Leaf Bulldogs played as if we had not stopped playing from last year.
They played with purpose and slick handling like a well-oiled machine.

The back line, under new vice-captain Duran Law, were full of energy and running. All seven tries were scored by the back line once again, showing that our intentions are to spread the ball wide and play an entertaining brand of ‘rugga’.

Credit for the well-drilled back line must go to the coaches, Flippie Fourie and Lennert Buitendach.

Try scorers were Paul Barnard, Ronnie Parker, Duran Law, Pipie, Nathan Viljoen (x2) and Baz Wessels. Duran Law converted five tries and also slotted two penalties, giving him a tally of 21 points.

The Bulldogs won the game, with final score being 49-12.

‘Man of the match’ awards for this game went to none other than the captain and vice-captain, Izak Boshoff and Duran Law respectively.

The Bulldogs would like to thank the following for giving up their whole Saturday to make sure the game would run smoothly…

Duran Law having a great day on the field

Gerald Boardman and Keith Don-Wauchope were the first at the field, getting everything right, Gerald even raking grass and sand to make sure the field was 100%. There is just no end to this man!

A big thank you to Linda Boshoff, Barbara Beukes and Ivy Witthoft, who made sure that the clubhouse, toilets and change rooms were in tiptop condition.

The Clover Leaf Ladysmith Bulldogs would like to welcome Maxine and Deidre Meiring onto the management team. Maxine was involved with Falke rugby union and we are very privileged to have her in our club. The two of them have already made a huge impact; they are both biokineticists.
