Pairs contest bowling competition finals

The final of the Newcastle Bowling Club Mixed Pairs competition was played on Sunday morning between Alice and Ron Howe, and Trevor and Sue Hutchinson.

NCANDU – The final of the Newcastle Bowling Club Mixed Pairs competition was played on Sunday morning between Alice and Ron Howe, and Trevor and Sue Hutchinson.

At the halfway stage there was nothing in the game, with Alice and Ron leading by three shots (8 – 5).

By the 11th end however, they extended their lead to an eight-shot difference (14 – 6) and despite Trevor and Sue scoring on three consecutive ends, to reduce the deficit to 14 – 9 on the 14th end, Alice and Ron scored a single on the final end to win the title for the third consecutive year.

A number of Newcastle teams travelled to Vryheid last weekend to play in its annual Pick ‘n Pay tournament, which attracted a field of 28 teams.

Vryheid’s John Cross, Henry Klofta and Nolan Malan (58 + 55) were the winners of the day, with Newcastle’s Aspen Shaw, Monty Steele and Michele Steele finishing in a creditable third place (53 + 33).

Sid Price plus Fritz and Marie Botha finished fourth (51 + 24) and the team of Erich Holm, plus Koos and Leonie Cilliers eighth.

A good day was had by all with all 28 teams receiving prizes.

The Northern Zone Men’s and Ladies’ Fours competition takes place this weekend, and Newcastle teams are wished good bowling.
