Karate-ka off to world championships

"This was the first time that the SA Championships catered for a division that allowed those with disabilities such as Down syndrome to take part. This is really great as it proves that karate is for everyone – no matter age or ability"

Two members of the Dundee JKA Karate Club are off to Ireland in August to compete in the Funakoshi Gichin Cup World Karate-do Championships.
Sensei Vishen Bhoonpershad and Trisha Rajkumar will be in Limerick – Vishen as a judge while Trisha will be part of the senior women’s division kumite (free fighting) team.

Sensei Vishen Bhoonpershad, Trisha Rajkumar, Kiana Sadaw and front, Luyanda Mbonani.

This follows the Dundee dojo’s participation in the SA JKA Championships in Durban last month. Trisha, Vishen, and nine-year-old Luyanda Mbonani and fellow Dundee karate club member, Kiana Sadaw all competed along with 3 000 other karate-ka from around the country.

It was little Luyanda Mbonani who stole the show, coming home with two medals – silver for kata (movement) and a bronze for kumite.

“This was the first time that the SA Championships catered for a division that allowed those with disabilities such as Down syndrome to take part. This is really great as it proves that karate is for everyone – no matter age or ability,” said Sensei Vishen.
