Badminton club is in full swing

The Newcastle Badminton Club is now open for new members.

It’s the fastest racquet sport in the world.

While many might believe squash or tennis holds this title, locals are proving just why badminton is a sport to get up to speed with.

The Newcastle Badminton Club is now open for new members.

Ruwayne Chetty is among those well versed in the sport, having started his badminton career alongside his father, Ruben, at the age of 13.

His new goal is to inspire other youths to take up their racquets.

“We really want to get the youngsters involved. Badminton isn’t offered at school level but we do have some high school learners involved with the club.”

Ruwayne described badminton as a good workout and stress reliever, also presenting opportunities for meeting new people and competing at district and provincial tournaments.

The scope for a talented badminton player is vast.

“There is an annual tournament in Ladysmith and the District Championships. From there, one could go to more competitions at national level, and if you excel there, to play across the country.”

Benefits of badminton include increased fitness, improved hand-eye coordination and reflexes, and discipline generally associated with sport.

All that is required is a racquet and comfortable clothing.

“The club provides the shuttles for players.”

The ultimate goal of the Newcastle Badminton Club is to increase its younger membership and to grow the sport on the local side.

Amateur and skilled players are both welcome.

Practices are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7pm onwards – for more details, contact Ruben on 082 444 1691.
