A ‘medal rush’ at N KZN karate Champs

"I would urge anyone, ages six and older, to come and give karate a try. The benefits of karate in the long term are incredible. "

Dundee Karate-ka continue to prove that they can hold their own against the best in Northern KwaZulu-Natal. A total of 23 Karate-ka from the Dundee JKA Dojo took part in the recent NKZN Championships held in Newcastle.
Despite the tough level of competition faced, the local Karate-ka came away with 37 medals, nine of which were gold. It was an impressive result for the dojo.
This time students who had previously been unable to compete were given a platform to show off their hard work and skill.
“The level of competition was outstanding and made it a real challenge for even the most composed and experienced karate-ka.
As instructors, I think we are doing a good job of raising the standard little by little every year,” said Sensei Vishen Bhoonpershad.
The results proved that the Dundee Dojo has what it takes to be a force in NKZN and also highlighted once again why they do so well on a national and international level. Dundee was well represented at the Nationals that took place in May this year, with four people representing the dojo, three of whom obtained their SAJKA South African National Colour.

Back: Khanya Mbonani (two gold), Shregas Raghubeer (one gold), Abigail Weber (two gold) and Sinead Lundin (one gold). They are flanked by, left, Kiana Sadaw (sub-instructor) and Sensei Vishen Bhoonpershad.

Two members of the dojo, Sensei Vishen and Sensei Trisha Rajkumar also went on to represent South Africa and Dundee at the 14th Gichin Funakoshi Cup that was held in Limerick, Ireland.
Sensei Vishen added that the Dundee JKA Dojo has been growing steadily this year owing to social media, word of mouth and the Northern Natal Courier being used to advertise events and results.
“I would urge anyone, ages six and older, to come and give karate a try. The benefits of karate in the long term are incredible.
“It will help you stay focused and calm in stressful situations, it will help you stay fit and healthy and most importantly you will be armed with the knowledge to be able to defend yourself should the need ever arise,” Sensei Vishen said.
