Ladysmith swimming star Cassidy Muller does well at Midmar Mile
She swam in support of her chosen charity, 'Save the Rhino'
Cassidy Muller took part in the 8 Mile (12.8km) event at the Aquelle Midmar Mile held on February 10 and 11. This is Cassidy’s fifth 8 Mile and she gained her permanent number, which is a great achievement for her.
She swam in support of her chosen charity, ‘Save the Rhino’, for which she raised R12,400. This is truly inspiring!
Cassidy also took part in all four races that took place on the Saturday, and the last four that took place on Sunday. Her main race was the seventh race (women’s 14-30).
Cassidy stated that she doesn’t focus on where she comes in the races, only on her times and finishing for charity.
It was hard work to complete all the events, especially the third and fourth event on Saturday, with the conditions not being ideal. It was windy and the waters were choppy, but nevertheless she continued on and was successful in achieving what she set out to do. She found it helped her push her limits.
“You have to be mentally strong and motivate yourself to finish,” Cassidy explained.

“This event is something I look forward to every year,” she added.
She said that none of it would be possible without the people who make up her strong support system, who are there with her throughout her swimming endeavours.
“I’d like to thank my family and coaches, Ivan and Denise Ball. Thanks also to all my sponsors who made it possible to raise funds for ‘Save the Rhino’.”
Cassidy Muller is part of the 8 Mile Club that was started in 2004 by Stan Koslowski after he had swum 8 miles three years previously in order to raise money for rhino conservation at the Aquelle Midmar Mile. It has grown from just 24 swimmers in 2004 to over 230 swimmers this year, including a team of 12 who swam the 16 miles.
There are a total of six main charities, which are Save the Rhino, Wildlands Conservation Trust, CANSA, CHOC, Pink Drive, Princess Charlene of Morocco Foundation and Singakwenza Foundation, and 14 smaller ones.
Stan and the club would like to congratulate Cassidy on her achievements. They thank all their sponsors and encourage all swimmers, young and old, to join them next year.
