Newcastle Highlanders win first Shosholoza Cup as Sentraal rugby celebrate their 50 years in great style

The wet conditions did not deter the enthusiasm for what was a bumper day of sport

Newcastle Highlanders put in a sterling performance to win the first Shosholoza Cup hosted by Sentraal Rugby Club in wet conditions at the Dundee High School field.

The Newcastle team beat Drakensberg of the Winterton area with captain Wandile Sibiya leading from the front.

Piet Retief beat Vryheid to win the Shield Trophy.  Henk Booysen, Sentraal coach, confirmed that the tournament that attracted teams from throughout Northern KZN and Mpumalanga would be an annual event in Dundee.

The tournament was sponsored by Tugela Creative Shades and HB Construction.

The clubhouse at Dundee High has  undergone an upgrade making it far more attractive.

The tournament attracted a bumper crowd with many former Sentraal players attending – with Piet Trichardt flying in from the UK.  In the evening Sentraal held their reunion dinner and last season’s trophy winners were also awarded.
