SPORT: Golfers tee off for charity
The atmosphere was jubilant despite the sun beating down.
A total of 168 golfers played their part in uplifting the needy.
On Saturday, Newcastle Golf Club was packed with players preparing to tee off during the Triple 8 Transport Sponsored Better Ball competition.
The atmosphere was jubilant despite the sun beating down.
Triple 8’s Andrew Kirkland said funds raised through the golf day would benefit the SAWF [South African Women’s Federation] Louis Hildebrandt Children’s Home in Volksrust.
“There are many children in need. The home has no washing machine and the children don’t have clothing or shoes.”
Once the day’s play wrapped up, golfers indulged in the wise and amusing words of former Proteas cricket, Pat Symcox, and the musical stylings of Piet Pompies, of DJ Ossewa fame.
They also partook in delectable curry and rice for supper.
Kirkland said the day was rounded off with a prizegiving function and an auction by Pompies for exclusive collector’s items, meat hampers, holiday getaways and more.
The amount raised from the auction is still being totalled.
However, Kirkland gave a ballpark figure of between R10 000 and R15 000 for the day, and described the event as hugely successful.
“The party went on late into the evening and we will definitely do it again next year. Thank you to all our sponsors for helping make the day such a success.”
The team of Ebert Koorts and Ryno de Vos claimed first place in the competition with 50 points, while Manie Mostert and Claude Joubert were second with 49 points.
Third place went to Eben Botha and Paul Byrom with 48 points on count out.
