Dundee Dojo impresses at NKZN Championship
Many of the Dundee karateka qualified for the SAJKA Nationals taking place in May this year.
Dundee karateka kicked it into a new gear recently at the Northern KwaZulu-Natal JKA Karate Championships.
The championships were helped at the Farmer’s Hall in Newcastle at the beginning of March and attracted the cream of the karate crop from NKZN.
Competitors battled it out for bragging rights in the various categories and the Nidan students attempted their respective qualification exams. Here they had to prove that they were capable of handling the pressure while still being consistent and fair in their decisions.
As the action intensified, it was the seniors who stole the show. The winner in the Ladies Senior Open divisions for both kata and kumite was Brenda Oosthuysen from Newcastle. Lafras Oosthuysen (Newcastle) won the kata division in the Men Senior Open with Mthunzi Mbatha (Newcastle) taking gold in the kumite division.
The Dundee dojo practices every Monday and Wednesday evening from 5:30pm to 6:30pm for beginners, and 6:30pm to 7:30pm for the advanced and black belts.
The Dundee JKA karate dojo held their own during the championships with a total of 70 entries, the largest yet. Many of the Dundee karateka qualified for the SAJKA Nationals taking place in May this year.
“While most people see only the results and outcome of such an event, the people behind the scenes tend to be forgotten but the NKZN JKA Championship would not be as successful as it is without the people in the background. To everyone assisting with tuck-shop sales, the admin ladies and organisers, judges and referees, competitors and spectators; none of this would be possible without you. Thank you,” said Sensei Vishen Bhoonpersad.
“Lastly, we would like to thank Sensei Warren Bainton, Tournament Director of the Japan Karate Association (JKA) of South Africa, who audited the competition. Without his continued input, guidance and support, tournaments such as these would be difficult to manage. Oss!”
