Athletes sink their teeth into annual Meatmasters Mountain Challenge

What a super Saturday morning it was for VAC!

The club thanks all the trail walkers, runners and mountain bike athletes, who competed in the Meatmasters Mountain Challenge and made the event so special.

“Congratulations to each one of you for completing a very tough event. We had perfect weather and a perfect venue for a new twist to the Meatmasters Mountain Challenge.”

20km MTB: Elize van Eden (third), Cayla Putter (first) and Chantel Filipe (second).

A change of venue to the Ntinginono Enviro Centre was carefully considered, but the AbaQulusi Municipality came through, providing an excellent, cosy venue. VAC thanks Paula Small for making this possible.

“Thank you, Erhard and thank you to the CPF for providing the food and drinks for the event, and for the excellent work you do in the community. There are so many thank yous to be done!”

Franco Carstens (third), Werner van Rensburg (first) and Dirk Grobler (second) in the 20km MTB event.

This year’s chairman, Richard Scheepers is thanked for his exceptional leadership skills, for his hard work planning, marking, checking and remarking the route, and for briefing and organising the route marshalls, together with Daan Kotze and Patrick Friend.

“Thank you for providing the event with the foundation of our success. ”
”Thank you to the farmers that allow us on their farms.”

40km MTB top athletes: Lize Swanepoel – third, San Haywood – first, Suzette Leach – second.

This year, VAC took a brave step in doing away with water sachets, which are normally strewn about in the wind, and are often picked up by mountain bikers on the routes months after the event.
Instead, each trail runner was provided with a specially designed, reusable water bottle.

VAC thanks the sponsors who made this new step possible, and also acknowledges Ronel Delport – for capturing the athletes in their element and for allowing images to be published on the Meatmasters Mountain Challenge Facebook page.

40km MTB top competitors: Rudiger Hinze – third, Klaas Meintjies – first, Ernest Franzen – second.

“Thank you to Melissa Scheepers and her team for running the event entries, and Lorraine van der Nest, Johan Coetzee and their team for the finish, timing and prize giving. A big thank you to the moms, dads and friends of the mountain bike athletes who, as guests of VAC, marshalled on routes, welcomed entrants, did timing and the finish of the MTB events. Thank you to Patrick Friend’s staff from Natalia, who provided the finish point water table filled with goodies.

The two Bonganis, Ndlovu and Msimango, who placed third and second respectively. They used the event as training for the following day’s marathon.

Thank you to the local businesses, who supported the event by providing water tables filled with eats and drinks for the athletes on the routes. For a list of our sponsors, please see our Facebook page. Thank you Ronell and Marlene Bean for morning coffee and Cathy de Beer for the financial auditing. Thanks Ruan, for always providing such excellent sound at our events and for Barbara Dicks, for being an excellent event MC and announcer.”
