Watch: Derby Day helps children swing into the saddle

Children from Bergville had a blast riding their new bikes, which were donated to them by Volkswagen, at a Blue Bikes Derby Day recently. This event took place at the Dukuza Sports Ground.

Volkswagen, under its ‘Volkswagen for Good’ banner, turned the town blue with the donation of bicycles to schoolchildren in the area, as well as to members of local community policing forums.

The donation forms part of Volkswagen’s Blue Bikes empowerment initiative. In partnership with non-profit organisation Qhubeka, more than 3600 bicycles have been donated in the past five years, with the aim of helping children enjoy more of their childhood through being more mobile. With a bicycle, children can travel faster and further, and carry more.

Andile Dlamini (Head of Communications for Volkswagen Group South Africa) said, “This is the second time we have been able to celebrate the donation of bicycles to Bergville through a Derby Day and we’re excited about what we will see coming out of this community in the years to come.”

For those who previously had to walk great distances to and from school, the impact of the bicycle donation is immeasurable, as is the sense of freedom and purpose which comes from being mobile. Children were the picture of joy as they raced one another during the Blue Bikes Derby Day.
