Lacing up for the 43rd Mpati Mountain Race

Over four decades have passed since the Mpati Mountain Race was first run but the event still continues to be a highlight on the local events calendar.
Now in its 43rd year, the Mpati Mountain Race, hosted by Biggarsberg Athletics Club (BBAC) since the very first event, will take place on September 14 with the starting and ending point at Dundee Junior School.
Runners and walkers come from far and wide to participate in the event.

BBAC chairperson, Lani van der Mescht is hoping to attract more locals to be a part of this year’s event however.

“Last year, we had around 100 runners for the 15km and 60 for the 5km, so we hope our race draws the same amount or more! We really want to encourage our locals in Endumeni to come join us for the 5km. It is the perfect family outing. Bring the kids, push the pram, and spend some time outdoors,”said Lani.

What sets the Mpati Mountain Race apart from other events is that it proves to be a real challenge.
It’s tougher than road races and going up the mountain in the 15km event is not easy, although many believe the view at the top is well worth it.

This year, BBAC will sell delicious hamburgers at the race.
There will also be really amazing lucky draw prizes that any of the participants can win in, which includes one of three race day T-shirts specially made for the 2019 Mpati Mountain Race.
