Chelmsford Angling Club reels in victory
After some major upset in the first round of the league, many of the top clubs strategised about how to stop the 'underdogs'.
The Natal Fresh Water Angling Association held its first round of the Devland Impuphu Knockout at all zones of Sandford, Ntshingwayo Dam.
After some major upset in the first round of the league, many of the top rated clubs had to regroup and strategise about how they were going to stop the ‘underdogs’. Angling started at 6am, with the draw of the ball indicating which zone an angler could cast off in.
The clubs contesting the knockout fixture were Itec Freespool, Chelmsford, Endumeni, Riverside and Docrats Angling Clubs. As usual, the early morning bites were few as anglers waited patiently for the day to warm up. As the day progressed, anglers started to land some good catches – the batteries on their cellphones were eventually drained due to the constant feedback given to their members as to what bait was doing the trick.
At 4pm, the weighmaster put the scale away and anglers waited to see which four clubs would progress to the next round, as well as who would face who…
It was Chelmsford which claimed victory on 39 points, followed by Itec Freespool on 31 points. The ever-improving and vibrant Endumeni AC was third on 21 points, ahead of Riverside on 14 and unfortunately Docrats missed out on the semi-final, with only nine points.
Top anglers for the day were:
Mervyn Brown Bhudoo of Itec Freespool – a carp weighing 3,490 kilograms
Sanjeev Singh of Chelmsford – a barbel weighing 5,020kg
Both anglers walked away with a R250 voucher and a trophy each.
The next fixture is the semi-finals of the knockout competition on October 20. During this round, the might Itec Freespool takes on Endumdeni, while Chelmsford and Riverside collide.
