Mother Nature no match for these spirited golfers

One of the participants chuckled as he stated, "It never rains on a golf course..."

Golfers gathered at the Vryheid Country Club last Thursday to take part in the annual MTN Golf Day, but Mother Nature had other plans.
Despite the imminent threat of inclement weather and intermittent downpour, as ominous clouds rolled in over the horizon, as the old saying goes ‘you can’t keep a good golfer down’.
One of the participants chuckled as he stated, “It never rains on a golf course…” and the show went on. Men and women who took part dressed warmly and waterproofed themselves, as they headed out to tee off in somewhat temperamental weather conditions.
Mother Nature could not put a damper on the spirit of the golfers and 18 holes were played, with the siren only sounding once during the competition, to call the golfers inside to safety.
The winning team was comprised of Vivian Smit, Ernie Matthews, Jerry Gunther and Henry Fraser.
The highlight of the tournament however, was perhaps the magnificent hole-in-one on Hole Four by Paul Kruger, which some described as ‘an almost impossible shot’.
Lizette Kruger, Bernice Harding, Annalise Erasmus and Ruzelle Grobbelaar won the prize for the best ladies’ team.
Trevor Domoney, Gavin Minott, Marco de Wet and JD Hattingh won the prize for playing the most golf, while Danie Potgieter, Arthur Sharpe, Deon Harris and the Herald’s own Elaine Rodway won the prize for the best mixed team.
After 18 damp holes of golf, patrons warmed up with a round of drinks at the 19th Hole, made all the more enjoyable by a phenomenal performance by Vryheid’s own Black Wiskey, which never fails to impress.
MTN thanked everyone who made its golf day the resounding success it was, and looked forward to seeing them at the next one.
