Soccer tournament kicks it up a notch

Magwaza concluded by saying she would love to see the tournament grow even bigger next year.

Fitmorun hosted its annual six-a-side soccer tournament at the Paradise Sports Grounds on December 7.

The tournament’s organiser, Zama Magwaza, said the purpose of the sport event was to unleash new talent:

“I do not only want to see new talent being discovered in our town, but we need to further see that the development of
the sport is properly taken care of. Such a tournament is done close to the festive season because we want to keep the
youth away from participating in things like drug abuse.

They prepare for the tournament way before the day of the games, which means they are properly distracted, staying fit and active while they are practicing. Also, as a woman in sport, it’s not always easy to survive the mainly male-dominated industry. I am here to say to all other women, if you are passionate enough, you can truly succeed.”

Magwaza also highlighted when her love for sport began:

“I must have been six or seven years old when I realised I love football. It was on the dusty streets of Madadeni where I grew up, while playing with my brothers outside that I saw I wanted to pursue the sport. After finishing high school, I studied Sport Management at Durban University of Technology (DUT), so I could further understand the sport industry, including the business side of things.”

Magwaza concluded by saying she would love to see the tournament grow even bigger next year, to also include female soccer games.

The teams that were in the final were Doctors Stars and Hennessy FC, with Hennessy FC winning 3-2.
