Husband and wife duo aim for the bull’s eye
Both are very competitive and even when playing against each other, there is an air of professionalism and the will to win
Husband and wife duo Viren (44) and Natasha Mungru (37) have more than just a love for their family in common… they are both seasoned and accomplished darts players with a passion for the development of the game.
Having been married for 17 years, they have one son, Prince (15), and a daughter, Angel (8), who share their parents’ love for the game of darts.

Both Viren, also known as ‘Van Gerwin’, and Natasha are members of the Umtshezi Darts Association, with Viren playing in the local club for six years and Natasha for four years.
They have cemented their positions as top players in the club, with Natasha winning the women’s league for three consecutive years and being the first female in Northern KwaZulu-Natal to score 180.
Viren has been named one of the top 10 players in Northern KZN; he has won the Umtshezi Darts Association League and has scored a 170 close. It was while watching and supporting her husband that Natasha grew to love the game.
So what do they enjoy about darts?
“The fact that darts has no age barriers. At our age, we can still obtain KZN colours, South African colours and even become the champions of the world,” says Viren.
“It’s an individual game, so you can show your talent and competitiveness,” adds Natasha.
Playing together is also a bonus for the couple.
“We get to watch each other play on the big stage and be each other’s support. It makes us stronger together, which in turn makes us the darts power couple of Estcourt,” they say.
Both are very competitive and even when playing against each other, there is an air of professionalism and the will to win. The Mungrus recommend that couples try their hand at darts.
“To all couples out there, please play darts together. It will really bring the two of you closer together and ignite the spark in your relationship. Going to all the events together and being each other’s support makes your relationship strong and builds a bond that no one can break. For those of you who play alone, remember that darts has no age restriction – you can become champion of Estcourt, champion of KZN, champion of SA and even champion of the world. That’s the beauty of darts,” they enthuse.
The couple adds that besides sharpening your maths skills, darts also teaches players respect for each other, as well as self-discipline.
When Viren and Natasha aren’t playing with club members, they enjoy darts for at least an hour a day and rope the children in to be part of the fun too.
