NEWCASTLE KZN: Breakwaters takes the triple crown
The honours for the top three spots were hotly contested, with a solitary point separating the top three anglers.
Breakwaters Angling Club defeated its fierce rivals, Dannhauser AC to claim a triple championship.
In the final stage of the AA Coaches Grand Challenge, hosted on May 30 at Richgate Park, the signs all pointed to another day of poor catches: the weigh-in was completed quickly and the clerks had few catches to record.
Many anglers returned home with empty keep nets.
“It was a testing day, as the elusive fish tested the patience and innovative thinking of determined anglers, as the title of Grand Challenge champion was on the line,” explained Angling Professional League (APL) president, Matthew Shunmugam.
With Zones 1 and 2 chosen as the battleground, Dannhauser AC sought to avenge the defeat it suffered at the hands of Breakwaters at the AA Coaches Knock Out on May 16.
On the other hand, Breakwaters AC was equally determined to add another piece of silverware to its championship cabinet, having already won the Knock Out and the Mohamed Midas League in what many have described as a gruelling season.

For Dannhauser AC, it was simply not to be.
Breakwaters AC accumulated 29 points thanks in part to eight individual points by the Angler of the Day, Matthew Shunmugam, who received the purple cap, R200, and his outright trophy, while Dannhauser AC could only muster 14 points.
The APL’s final event of the season was the Closed Competition on June 13 at Sandford.
Winners in the various categories of the league will receive lucrative prizes for landing ‘the big ones’ on the day, and Shunmugam expects a competitive and socially embracing end to another fine angling season.
“The Mohamed Midas League table ended with Breakwaters AC topping the log with 50 points, followed by Dannhauser AC on 39 points, Stillwaters AC on 29 points, Challengers AC on 18 points, and Glencoe AC on 14 points.”

Title-holders for the 2020/2021 season are as follows:
- Shahid Osman of Glencoe AC – heaviest scaled fish for a carp weighing 4,320 kilograms and a R500 incentive prize for landing a carp of more than 4kg
- Rudi Strydom of Stillwaters AC – heaviest non-scaled fish for a barbel of 10,68kg and a R500 incentive prize for landing a barbel of more than 10kg
- Ethan Jansen of Dannhauser AC – rare specie for a kurper of 885g and a R500 incentive prize
- Talia Veran of Dannhauser AC – Junior Angler of the Year
- Ronnie Rampersadh of Breakwaters AC – Senior Angler of the YearAnil Boodhoo of Stillwaters AC – Angler of the Year.
Each of the category winners received an outright trophy and R250 in cash for their achievements, explained Shunmugam, while the top three anglers of the season received tackle vouchers valued at R3 000, R2 000, and R1 000 respectively compliments of Mohamed Midas and the APL.
“The honours for the top three spots were hotly contested, with a solitary point separating the top three anglers. Anil Boodhoo topped the log with 55 points, followed by Yudveer Naransamy of Breakwaters AC (54 points) and Ronnie Rampersadh (53 points).”
Anil also won a family weekend at a prestigious venue on the Vaal River.
“Thank you to all officials, members, sponsors, well-wishers, and family members for their support during one of the most challenging seasons, taking into account the protocols and restrictive conditions imposed during the various levels of the national lockdown,” concluded Shunmugam.
