Young soccer talent shines at Vryheid Sundowns FC

Vryheid Sundowns FC continues developing talented young footballers despite financial challenges.

Vryheid Sundowns Football Club is earning a reputation as one of northern KwaZulu-Natal’s most promising youth development structures. Owned and coached by Zweli Hlatshwayo, the club has become a beacon of hope for talented youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Catering for players between the ages of 13 and 17, the club has already tested itself against some of the province’s top development sides, including AmaZulu FC Development and KZN Football Academy. In December last year, Vryheid Sundowns participated in the Osizweni Tournament, where their competitiveness attracted the attention of national scouts.

Young stars making progress

Stars of Africa Football Academy, owned by renowned scout Farouk Khan, recently selected young player Lindokuhle Mthethwa, a learner at KwaBhanya High School, for further football development opportunities.

Another success story is Ayandiswa Shoba, a ladies’ football player previously coached by Hlatshwayo, who has risen through the ranks to play for Durban Ladies FC and has also featured on national television.

Coach Hlatshwayo said the team is built on discipline and a competitive mentality.

“These children only need a chance to prove themselves because they are passionate about football and truly want to succeed,” he said.

Financial challenges remain

Hlatshwayo also revealed that financial challenges often make it difficult for the team to attend matches, with him sometimes covering expenses from his own pocket to ensure the children can continue playing.

Beyond football, he also assists some players with school uniforms and clothing to ensure talent is not lost because of financial hardship.

“As Vryheid Sundowns FC, we would like to thank Vryheid Roots Butchery for their continued support after providing the players with soccer jerseys. We still appeal to businesses and individuals to support us, no matter how big or small. Whether it is transport, boots or soccer kits, we would be very grateful,” added Hlatshwayo.

Gauteng tournament awaits

The next chapter for Vryheid Sundowns begins in June when the team travels to Gauteng to participate in a tournament against some of the country’s top football academies.
