Comrades Marathon tests determination of Vryheid athletes

Vryheid Athletic Club celebrates remarkable Comrades Marathon finishes, milestones and inspiring debut performances.

The Comrades Marathon remains one of the most demanding and prestigious ultramarathons in the world, testing not only physical endurance but also mental strength, determination, and resilience. This year’s race once again showcased the true spirit of perseverance as athletes from the Vryheid Athletic Club (VAC) proudly took on the challenge alongside thousands of runners from around the globe.

Strong performances from VAC athletes

VAC was represented by 12 dedicated athletes who spent months preparing for the 85.77 km journey from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. Their commitment, discipline, and unwavering determination were evident as they tackled every hill, every kilometre, and every challenge the race presented. The club is incredibly proud of each athlete who stood on the start line and embraced the challenge of the Ultimate Human Race.

Leading the VAC contingent was Lunganie Mthethwa, who crossed the finish line in an outstanding 08:03:19, followed by Matt Cilliers (09:21:28) and PJ du Toit (09:21:29). Every athlete who completed the race earned their medal through grit, sacrifice, and countless hours of training.

Courage beyond the finish line

While the results reflect many outstanding performances, not every Comrades journey ends with a medal. Jaco Booysen unfortunately did not complete the race, making the brave and responsible decision to withdraw at the 65 km mark. Comrades is an unforgiving test of endurance, and knowing when to stop requires just as much courage as crossing the finish line. His determination to take on the challenge and battle through 65 kilometres remains an achievement worthy of recognition and respect.

Novice runners share memorable experiences

VAC Novice Runners Reflect on an Unforgettable Comrades Experience

The 2026 Comrades Marathon was a life-changing experience for many runners, especially for our novice Comrades participants who took on The Ultimate Human Race for the very first time. Each runner crossed the finish line with a unique story, but all shared the same sense of pride, determination, and gratitude.

Simoné Potgieter described her first Comrades as an exhilarating experience. She experienced a whirlwind of emotions over the course of 12 hours and was incredibly proud of herself for pushing through every challenge to reach the finish line. Simoné believes that, with God’s grace, she will be back in 2027 to earn her back-to-back medal.

For Lunganie Mthethwa, the race proved to be even tougher than expected, despite all the preparation leading up to race day. During the most difficult moments, he continuously reminded himself that no matter the circumstances, he simply had to finish. That determination carried him through to one of the biggest achievements of his running journey.

Nicole Landman described her first Comrades Marathon as an incredible experience filled with emotions, challenges, and unforgettable moments. What stood out most to her was the incredible support from spectators along the route. Their energy, encouragement, and belief in complete strangers gave her the strength to keep moving forward. For Nicole, Comrades is so much more than a race—it’s an experience that will stay with her forever, and she is already looking forward to earning her back-to-back medal in 2027.

Elizma Nortjé said her first Comrades Marathon exceeded all expectations. The day was filled with challenges, emotions, and unforgettable memories that tested both body and mind. Crossing the finish line was one of the proudest moments of her life and a powerful reminder that determination can take you further than you ever imagined. She is grateful for the experience and excited to return next year in pursuit of her back-to-back medal.

A club united by perseverance

These four novice runners embodied the true spirit of Comrades—courage, perseverance, and the refusal to give up. Their journeys inspired not only themselves but also their fellow VAC members. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and look forward to seeing them proudly wear their back-to-back medals in 2027.

The club would also like to acknowledge the families, supporters, volunteers, and fellow runners whose encouragement along the route played a vital role in helping athletes reach their goals. Comrades is about far more than a finish time—it is about perseverance, friendship, sacrifice, and the pursuit of a dream.
