Usually it is all played just for the love of the game. Last weekend the beautiful game was played in support of CANSA.

The CANSA Futsal tournament drew out a crowd of players and fans of the game, when eight teams clashed at the Paradise Astro-Turf Courts on Sunday.

In true tournament fashion, a set of round robin matches was played to determine which teams would advance to the semi-finals.

One of the teams that really made a great showing during the tournament, was Ababeel.

The team comprised of young lads who had just entered their high school years.

The spirit and determination of the youngsters was admirable, but when facing league giants, Al-Ahly, they were unfortunately knocked out of the tournament, losing four -nil in the semi-finals.

Al-Ahly once against showed why they were one of Newcastle’s feared sides on the soccer field, as they outplayed every opponent they faced off against head to head during the tournament.

Al-Ahly won the finals of the tournament triumphantly in a four-nil game against Raggae Boys.

CANSA offered their thanks to Majuba TVET College for all its assistance in making the event a success.

Nashveer Nemesar, one of the organiser’s of the soccer tournament said, “CANSA would like to thank all the teams for supporting this charitable event. It was a remarkable day and a significant amount was raised. CANSA thanked NCSA for their generosity to sponsor the soccer courts for the entire day. CANSA has indeed acknowledged all their efforts to make this day a notable success, and would also like to thank the Department of Sports and Recreation for sponsoring the soccer kit as the winning prize.”

All proceeds generated from this event would be donated to the CANSA.
