Hockey tourney finds the net

As pupils from across the country settle into their school routine, KwaZulu-Natal first team hockey girls are beginning to train for the 2016 SPAR KZN School Girls Hockey Challenge, which kicks off in February.

As pupils from across the country settle into their school routine, KwaZulu-Natal first team hockey girls are beginning to train for the 2016 SPAR KZN School Girls Hockey Challenge, which kicks off in February.

The regional, annual tournament, which travels around KZN to 10 host schools, has close to 80 first teams participating, with the Grand Finals held in Durban in July.

For the past five years, the Grand Finals, which were jointly hosted by Thomas More College and St Mary’s DSG in Kloof, will be hosted exclusively by St Mary’s, with a new programme for the finals weekend rolling out.

This year, Varsity College has joined forces with organisers, coming on board to offer one hockey player a bursary to their institution.

“Varsity College is excited to announce a new initiative associated with the SPAR KZN School Girls Hockey Challenge for 2016, where one deserving young lady will get an opportunity to study a quality IIE Higher Education Qualification through us, and of course, get to play premier division hockey in Durban for the Varsity College Hockey Club,” said a delighted Carole Adam, National Sports Manager at Varsity College.

The bursary is open to all participants in the tourney, even if their school does not make the finals.

At the finals, the winner of the bursary will be announced – the recipient will be notified beforehand, as they will be invited to the prize-giving.

“Heading into the sixth year of the tournament, we feel affirmed of the success of our tournament; it has become a highlight on the schools’ sport fixtures. Due to our success, the tournament has spilled across borders into other provinces,” stated SPAR Managing Director, Rob Philipson.

St Dominic’s Academy will host the Northern KZN Regional in Newcastle on February 27.

The remainder of the regional competitions will be hosted at girls’ schools in the Pietermaritzburg and Durban area, Danville, Kokstad, Richards Bay, Hermannsburg and Thomas More College.

“The Grand Finals take place over the weekend of July 23 and 24, with the winners of each regional converging on St Mary’s DSG to battle it out on the turf.”
