Sarel and Perline Marais celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 4.
Their family have come from England and all over South Africa to celebrate with them.
Sarel originally hailed from Johannesburg and came to work in Newcastle. Perline was born in Cape Town and moved to Newcastle where they met in 1962.
Their three children, Taresa, Sandra and Sarel Jnr were born at Newcastle Provincial Hospital.
Their son Sarel was born in 1968 at the time when Bears Furniture Store was celebrating its opening and all babies born at the time were given a
gift. The family moved away from Newcastle but returned 25 years later in 1998.
In 1964 the ‘newly weds’ celebrated Newcastle’s Centenary, which was held in Allen Street with braais and dancing in the streets.
Later the town hall was opened where the dancing and festivities continued.
