TECH: Lining up the best gaming shooters

There’s a reason First Person Shooters (FPS) have such a large following.

When you take any combination of crisp graphics, tactical warfare, weapon modifications, battle-steeped storyline, long-range sniping and multiplayer functionality, FPS establishes itself as an immersive genre.

Plus, who doesn’t love shooting things (in games, of course)?

Here’s an overview of the FPS titles gamers can look forward to this year:

DOOM

If any, the fourth official instalment in the acclaimed gore-spattered FPS series is one of the most anticipated titles in recent years. Taken over by Bethesda Softworks, this reboot brings back weapons like the super shotgun and the BFG 9000, and a host of demonic enemies to let loose on.

Far Cry Primal

Across the four-game series (plus spin-offs and DLCs), Far Cry established itself as an open-world shooter, capitalising on untamed locations and tapping deeper into survival elements. Primal sets the tone again, casting your character back into a prehistoric age, fending off other tribes and deadly beasts with primitive weaponry and fire.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3

After the mediocre reception of CI Games’ earlier titles, there is a lot of expectation for the third game in the Ghost Warrior series. Expanding itself to an open-world tactical, players can finish missions through stealth, technology or plain ‘ol shooting.

LawBreakers

Another hot title coming up, this game is a free-to-play focused on team combat, pitting law against disorder in a futuristic setting. LawBreakers is set after the shattering of the moon, so expect some supernatural elements to slip in.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

The original Deus Ex was a masterpiece of its time. Many more titles on, the Deus Ex franchise still includes FPS, RPG and stealth elements, carried by the undertow of man-made evolution and the great moral questions the series has become known for.

Overwatch

Accompanied by an amazing animated cinematic trailer (linked on this page), the latest offering from Blizzard Entertainment allows players to rise as heroes of the Overwatch, an organisation which fell from grace but must again rescue humanity.

Unnamed Call of Duty title

Details on the upcoming game are sketchy, and all we know for now is that Infinity Ward has taken the reigns. For now, the developer has opened a position for a person to ‘create compelling and immersive gameplay’, hinting at a stronger campaign mode this time around.
