Ten Things Tuesday – What not to do in a taxi

These then things are essential to surviving a taxi ride

Hate them or love them, taxis are here to stay.

Many rely on them to get around and if you don’t, here are ten things you need to know before you get into one.

1. Don’t eat or drink in the taxi. Many people do and with every bump, their drink or KFC goes flying into nearby passengers. It’s worse when they’re having alcohol.

2. Don’t bring a R100 note if the fare is only R6. Not only does this annoy the driver, but it means he has to stop at a store along the way to make change.

3. Don’t bang the door. Not only will the driver give you a dirty look but there’s always the chance that the door will fall off in the process.

4. Don’t take off your shoes in the taxi. Some people love to make themselves at home in the taxi by taking off their shoes, much to the dread of others who have to put up with the smell. On really hot days, when everyone is squashed together, this is far worse.

5. Don’t talk too softly. You may not be used to shouting over other people, but in a taxi you have too. If you can’t be heard over the blaring music and the other passengers, the driver won’t hear that you needed to have been dropped off 3 stops away.

6. Don’t sit in the middle of the taxi if you’re thin. Taxi drivers love trying to fit in as much passengers as they can, so if you’re thin, they’re sending you to the back, where there’s more space for more thin people.

7. Never complain about the driver’s driving or ask where he got his license. You don’t want to get onto the bad side of the guy responsible for taking you from place A to place B.

8. Don’t have conversations across other people. There’s nothing more annoying than having someone lean over you to talk to the person next to you.

9. Don’t sit by the window. As much as you want to sit close to the window so that you can get fresh air, it’s a bad idea. Not only do you get sandwiched against the window, but you will never be allowed to open it. Taxi passengers hate having a window open and will lean across you to close it.

And finally….and most importantly…

10. Don’t sit in the front if you’re not willing to take people’s money and give change. The person sitting next to the driver has the job of making sure the money is collected and that the right change is given back. You don’t want to be the one to short change a taxi driver.
